Engage Health Group launch partnership with Check4Cancer

Check4Cancer supported by Engage Health Group

Engage Health Group are delighted to announce a new partnership with Check4Cancer, a trusted provider of personised cancer detection services.

Forming part of their employee benefits offering, Engage will now provide their clients with at-home test kits and in-clinic screening for the six most common cancers in the UK, at a discounted rate.  These include Breast, Cervical, Prostate, Skin, Bowel and Lung cancers.

Most people are touched in some way by cancer, either through personal experience or via a friend or family member. Around one in three people in the UK will develop cancer at some point in their lifetime and by 2024 it is anticipated that this will rise to one in two.

The pandemic is affecting access to cancer services across the UK

The Covid-19 pandemic continues to cause disruption across the country with thousands of people experiencing delays and cancellations to their usual GP and outpatient appointments. With no clear end in sight, it may be some time before NHS services are able to return to normal. Cancer services have been particularly affected: Cancer Research UK’s latest figures suggest as many as 200,000 people per week have not been screened for breast, bowel and cervical cancer, resulting in hundreds of people with cancer going undiagnosed. It is estimated that there will be 18,000 excess cancer deaths in the first twelve months of the pandemic.

Nick Hale (UK Director at Engage Health Group) commented

“Health screening is something I have personally championed over the past 20 years working in the Employee Benefits arena, but despite its importance and effectiveness, it’s often proved difficult to encourage take-up.  This new offering helps to remove any accessibility and cost barriers which might have existed, enables employers to promote screening to their workforce in a clear way and ultimately, can save lives”.

Engage Health Group will initially provide access to all Check4Cancer detection services via their own Employee Benefits Platform, Engage Connect, which was launched earlier this year.  There is no cost to employers for including the cancer screening services, and the benefit can be company or employee funded.

If you have been looking for cost-effective Benefit Technology for your organisation, with a range of voluntary benefits included as standard, we’d love to hear from you to arrange a demo!

  • Bupa Announce Covid Rebates to UK Health Insurance Customers

Bupa Announce Covid Rebates to UK Health Insurance Customers

Bupa covid rebates for individual and business health insurance customers

Bupa has this week advised that £125m will be rebated to its UK customers following disruption to medical treatment during the pandemic last year.  The rebate is expected to represent roughly one month’s premium to both individual and business health insurance customers.

Whilst treatment for critical conditions such as heart and cancer continued throughout the pandemic, some independent hospitals were commandeered by the NHS in order to support high hospitalisation rates caused by Covid.  This meant that many non-urgent but essential treatments couldn’t be conducted as planned, resulting in insurers making higher than expected profits.

During the height of the pandemic, Bupa pledged to pass back any exceptional financial benefit ultimately arising from the impact of Covid-19 to its UK health insurance customers, and many have been waiting to hear when this would be fulfilled.

It is understood that Individual health insurance and business health insurance customers who paid a premium between 23rd March and 30th September 2020 will qualify for the rebate, and that there is nothing customers need to do for the rebate to be made.

Bupa is among a number of UK health insurance providers who will have seen an exceptional reduction in claims costs during 2020, and it’s been fantastic to see how every insurer rallied to make their services remote friendly and ensure that customers could still access a range of other value-added benefits throughout a challenging period.

Other health insurance providers (WPA, AXA, Aviva and Vitality)

Of those other insurers, WPA (Western Provident Association) were the first to act in paying rebates to their customers, issuing two payments (April and June) equating to circa 40% of the customers monthly premium.

AXA Health, Aviva and Vitality are yet to confirm if and when refunds will be made to their own customers but have indicated that it is being reviewed.

  • New home cardiac assessment service launched by Bupa

New home cardiac assessment service launched by Bupa

There has been growing concern amongst cardiologists of late that thousands of people may be putting themselves at greater risk of long-term heart damage, having put off obtaining medical help during the pandemic.

As a result, Bupa UK has launched a new home-assessment cardiac service, which is designed to provide fast diagnosis of heart conditions.

The service has been piloted successfully in London and offers customers a video consultation with a cardiologist within 36 hours.  This follows a member contacting the Bupa claims team in the usual way and being triaged via their specialist team.

If it is deemed that further investigation is needed to provide a firm diagnosis, the latest electrocardiogram (ECG) and pathology test kits are sent directly to the customer’s home and a further video consultation is then arranged to discuss the results.

It’s hugely important that anyone suffering with cardiac symptoms, such as palpitations or discomfort, doesn’t delay seeking the appropriate medical advice.  During the pandemic there has been a significant reduction in the number of people seeking medical advice, and a general reluctance or inability to access medical support.  And whilst hips, knees and related conditions can safely wait, some things shouldn’t be put on hold.

This is yet another fantastic innovation from a leading insurer, acting to make the patient journey more convenient and efficient.

There has been a real drive from Employee Benefits providers in the last few months to adapt and ensure that their customers can still access services from the comfort of their own home, and this initiative is a great addition.

This new cardiac service is part of Bupa’s enhanced range of remote health services, where customers can get advice from nurses on everyday health concerns, treatment from GP’s, physios, mental health therapists, and fast access to diagnosis and treatment for critical conditions such as cancer, and mental health.

  • Virtual GP’s could save UK businesses £1.5bn and reduce NHS GP appointments by 50 million

Virtual GP’s could save UK businesses £1.5bn and reduce NHS GP appointments by 50 million

According to new report from AXA PPP Healthcare, online GP’s could deliver up to £1.5bn of savings for UK businesses.

Their report, which focuses around how online and telephone services can boost efficiencies across business and healthcare states significant savings can be made on the time it takes employees to travel to face-to-face medical appointments.

The figure of £1.5bn is derived from the total loss of working time in 2019, which could have been avoided if UK employees accessed online services instead.  These figures which have been produced by the Centre for Economics and Business Research (CEBR) are striking, and further support the forward march of telemedicine.

AXA report that in 2019, 13% of NHS GP appointments in England were held over the phone, but less than 1% were made using online video calls.  The CEBR estimates that had virtual/online GP appointments been offered as a first access point across all GP practices, the number of face-to-face consultations could have been reduced by 50 million!

It is well-documented that virtual GP appointments aren’t always the appropriate route and that sometimes a physical examination is necessary, however, the AXA report supports that receiving appropriate assistance via an online setting yields many benefits.

One of the major issues in the NHS GP setting is that of cancellations, or worse still, “no shows”.  In some ways, because people don’t pay for their GP appointments, the perceived value to them is zero, meaning that there’s little by way of discouragement or penalty when they don’t turn up for an appointment.  The reality of course, is that GP appointments DO cost something, whether people turn up or not.  This means that not only is it a poke in the eye to the UK taxpayer, but it also makes that slot unavailable to someone else who may be in greater need.

AXA’s report states that 28% of respondents cite the main reason for cancellations or simply not turning up to appointments was due to work commitments taking over.  And when you consider that 41% of UK adults need to take a half day or more off work to attend a face-to-face GP appointment, you can start to appreciate just how big the opportunity is to improve things.

Technology is playing an ever increasing role in the healthcare space as part of an integrated journey from sickness to health, and whilst this has been limited over the past few years to the “early adopters”, the recent COVID-19 pandemic will have helped to kick-start the wider population, especially UK businesses.

Of course many employers have included telemedicine as part of their Employee Benefits provision for some time, but there are still HR functions or organisations as a whole who find it difficult to convince key stakeholders of the return on investment.

It is now becoming more clear than ever of the tripartite benefit on offer:

Employee – Speedy access to GP, faster diagnosis, improved recovery

Employer – Less down time for staff, lower absence rates, improved productivity

Society – Less stain on NHS GP’s, lower cost to NHS as patients routed via employee benefit provision, more NHS availability and capacity to those who genuinely need face-to-face GP time.

As consumers in a technological world, we order taxis and meals from the palm of our hand with little thought, but there has been some reluctance with healthcare, which can feel a bit too important to sort out via your phone.

But, as is the way of the world, things are moving forward, and as long as patient needs are well-managed into the future, it seems impossible to imagine a downside.

Virtual GP services can be purchased standalone, but most employers provide access via their Private Medical Insurance, Health Cash Plan, Group Life or Group Income Protection plans.

  • Canada Life introduce “We Care” proposition across Group Risk product lines

Canada Life introduce “We Care” proposition across Group Risk product lines

When businesses consider the likes of Group Life, Group Income Protection and Group Critical Illness for their staff, it’s fair to say that their motivations are predominantly formed from concern of the worst happening, and protecting their people in that event.

You certainly couldn’t accuse the Group Risk market of being overly sexy and engaging.  In fact, when one imagines the discussion the Employee Benefits Advisor has with their client, you can’t help but envisage the drab, stony-faced scenes at the beginning of The Matrix in which Agent Smith interrogates Keanu Reeves; “Are you sure a benefit term of 2 years will be enough, Mr Anderson?”

Wouldn’t it be great if instead of focusing purely on the stark protection elements of these products, insurers developed a range of services which employees could actually utilise when they are alive and well?

Enter Canada Life’s “We Care”, offering a range of FREE additional employee benefits for companies which purchase ANY of their Group Risk products, including Group Life, Income Protection and Critical Illness.

Available solely via Canada Life’s CLASS range, employees will now have unlimited access to the following tertiary services.  What’s more, the additional services are available to every member of the employees’ immediate family as well as all staff within the organisation, even if they are not included on the insurance cover!

So what do employees now have access to?

    Virtual GP Consultation

Speak to a GP over the phone or via video call from the comfort of your own home. 24/7, 365 days of the year with no limitations on how often an employee calls.

    Second Medical Opinion

Access to over 50,000 leading consultants worldwide, offering expert second opinions on diagnosis and treatments for almost any condition.

    Smoking Cessation

A team of specialists to support employees all the way, helping to set goals and give tips to beat smoking.

    Mental Health Support

Anxiety, stress and depression are just a few health difficulties many people suffer from.  Up to 10 therapy sessions to guide employees in the right direction.

    Burn-out Prevention

Addressing symptoms as early as possible is the best way to beat it.  Up to 10 sessions with a specialist to assist with coping mechanisms and reduce stress.

    Life-events counselling

If an employee is suffering bereavement, going through a divorce or has had a traumatic experience, talking to someone can help.  Up to 10 personalised sessions with an expert means staff can get the right support.

    Healthy Diet at Work

A professional nutritionist can assist employees in devising a personalised diet plan, plus top tips on staying healthy when eating out.

    Get Fit Programme

Four or eight week get fit programmes with a specialist, providing a structured exercise regime.

With all of these great benefits, it’s easy to forget that they are additive to the core insurance purpose of protecting the lives and health of employees. But that’s the point really.  It’s sensible to put measures in place to protect ourselves against the worst happening, but now employers can feel good about mundane insurance plans in the knowledge that their teams have access to a range of genuinely useful additional services.

There are lots of Group Risk insurers now bucking the associated image of their industry, and this can only be a good thing, as ultimately, it means more employees and their families are protected.

But I can only show you the door Neo, you’re the one that has to walk through it!

  • Engage Health Group Offers Free Health Cover to Brighton-based Suicide Prevention Charity

Engage Health Group Offers Free Health Cover to Brighton-based Suicide Prevention Charity

Engage Charity Health Fund extends free health cover to all employees of Grassroots Suicide Prevention.

Funded by employee benefits specialist, Engage Health Group, the fund is designed to provide employees of small charities with free dental and optical care, physiotherapy, massage, virtual GP, CBT and counselling services.

Employee benefit provision is commonplace in the private sector and has become a big area of focus in recent years, with many companies designing their benefits strategy specifically to attract and retain the best calibre of staff.  An attractive benefits package has also been proven to improve productivity and morale, and to drive higher levels of employee engagement and loyalty.

Ian Abbott, Director at Engage Health Group commented,

“1 in 5 people think about suicide in their lifetime, and 1 in 15 go on to attempt suicide. Those numbers shocked me when I read them. It makes me even more grateful that we have fantastic charities like Grassroots Suicide Prevention to support people in need, educate, and influence change to help bring those numbers down. The work they do both locally and nationally is incredibly important and we are very pleased to be able to play a small role in supporting their team.”

Grassroots Suicide Prevention is a Brighton based charity with a simple but powerful goal: that no one should have to contemplate suicide alone. Their approach is to get people talking openly and effectively about suicide. Grassroots aims to break the stigma and teach people to identify those at risk in order implement effective suicide interventions.  Their work involves a combination of evidence-based suicide prevention and Mental Health First Aid courses, as well as their pioneering Stay Alive App.

Alex Harvey, Head of Development at Grassroots commented,

“By empowering individuals, organisations, and communities to keep themselves safe from suicide, Grassroots helps to prevent suicide and the devastation it leaves behind. Our success in this mission largely depends on our team’s hard work. They work hard because they’re passionate about preventing suicide – but also because they feel valued as employees. Given the intensity of our workload and our small size, when staff are unwell or absent we feel it – more so than a bigger organisation with greater resources and disposable income. It can potentially halt ongoing projects and restrict future development. The Engage Charity Health Fund will mean Grassroots can put sustained physical and mental health support in place, supporting our team’s needs, and ultimately helping us to prevent suicide.”

Nick Hale, Engage Health Group’s founding Director and developer of the Health Fund commented,

“The Health Fund has been in operation for almost two years now and it’s been fantastic to see how positively it has been received by the current recipients (Rockinghorse and Starr Trust).  We had a number of submissions from worthy causes and we’re delighted that the Sussex Cancer Fund, who do such a brilliant job supporting local people in conjunction with the NHS, will now benefit.”

We are a very small charity, and gestures like this from the business community make a real difference to the team. • Coronavirus – Is your Health Insurance Covered? We look at the different Health Insurance Companies

Coronavirus – Is your Health Insurance Covered? We look at the different Health Insurance Companies

As you might expect, we are experiencing a significant number of enquiries from customers asking whether their health insurance policy covers any element of the recent COVID-19 outbreak…

The answer here is not always a straightforward one and depends on which insurer you’re with, and in which region of the world you are covered.  International Private Medical Insurance (IPMI) offers a greater degree of cover by its very nature, but the stance can still differ significantly.

All major UK health insurers are holding the same position: That those diagnosed with COVID-19 will be best looked after within the NHS, as they are better equipped to manage these patients in isolation.  Any patients testing positive would likely be within an NHS clinic or hospital for monitoring and/or temporary relief of symptoms as opposed to active treatment typically available under UK PMI plans.

That said, it’s expected that a small number of patients could develop more severe complications as a result, such as pneumonia, which would be covered by their health insurance plan in most cases. Whilst they couldn’t be moved to a private hospital or facility, most health insurers will consider applications for NHS cash benefit (where the option is included on their plan), but this may be on a case-by-case basis.

Now that the World Health Organisation (WHO) has declared COVID-19 to be a pandemic disease, this can also change how an insurer will treat a potential claim, as some insurers have general scheme exclusions for pandemic diseases.

We have provided a breakdown below:

Domestic (UK) Health Insurance Companies / Providers

AXA – No exclusions for pandemic diseases and may offer NHS cash benefit where applicable

Bupa – Pandemics are a standard scheme exclusion so no cover available

Cigna – Would consider NHS cash benefit and related conditions for cover

Freedom – Pandemics are a standard scheme exclusion so no cover for this or related conditions

PHC – No cover for Coronavirus, related conditions or NHS cash benefit

Vitality – COVID-19 classed as “Emergency Treatment” and thus excluded from cover. Will consider NHS cashback for related eligible conditions.

WPA – No exclusions for pandemics and will offer NHS cash benefit where applicable

International Health Insurance Companies / Providers

Aetna – No exclusions for pandemics and Coronavirus is covered

AXA Global – Healthcare benefits will apply as normal if members are diagnosed with Coronavirus

Bupa Global – Does have an exclusion for epidemics and pandemics but currently, this isn’t being enforced and they are covering Coronavirus at their discretion.

Cigna – No exclusion for pandemics and Coronavirus is covered

Generali – Does have an exclusion for epidemics and pandemics but currently this isn’t being enforced and they are covering Coronavirus.

Now Health – There is no exclusion for pandemics and Coronavirus is covered

William Russell – Members are covered in the same way as they would be for any viral infections

All insurers are within their rights to deny claims if customers have travelled against the advice of the Foreign & Commonwealth Office travel advice.

Engage Health Group has made every effort to ensure the accuracy of this information having spoken with its insurer partners, but as the situation is changing regularly, it is recommended that customers contact their insurer directly with any specific questions.

If you have any questions or would like to find out more, please get in touch.

  • Engage Health Group appoints Hooray Health & Protection as Appointed Representative

Engage Health Group is pleased to announce that it has recently appointed Hooray Health & Protection as an Appointed Representative, with its two business owners, Ian Abbott and Nick Hale, also taking up Non-Executive roles in the start-up digital broker.

Hooray Health & Protection launched this month and will be one of the only firms in the UK to offer financial reviews by WebEx and telephone, making it more cost-effective and time-efficient for SMEs seeking health and protection insurance for their employees.

The company is headed by Charlie Cousins, who has a background in managing key relationships at one of the world’s largest employee benefits insurers. Cousins saw a gap in the market where traditional insurance brokers were abstaining from technology and the ever-changing needs of business owners.

Charlie Cousins, Director of Hooray Health & Protection said,

“At the start of 2019, there were just 49,820 group life policies and 17,304 group income protection schemes in the UK, which is shocking considering there are approximately 1.3 million businesses that have employees. This signals a serious problem in the industry where brokers are not keeping up with today’s SMEs and their needs.”
